EMERGENCY DENTISTRY

Dental help when you need it most

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU

You can never know when you might have a dental emergency, and when it happens, you’ll need a trusted dental care provider to turn to. Dental emergencies don’t always adhere to regular business hours, and when your pain just can’t wait, neither should your treatment.

MOST COMMON REASONS FOR EMERGENCY DENTISTRY:

  • Teeth knocked out

  • Severe toothache

  • Infection in the teeth

  • Fever

  • Painful inflammation in the gums

  • Pus in the mouth (tooth abscess)

  • Persistent bleeding

  • Serious injury to the inner-cheek

  • Broken tooth with sharp edges

  • Extremely loose teeth in adults

Minor cases of the above injuries may not be cause for immediate concern. A small chip in your tooth or a toothache that does not hinder your ability to speak, eat or rest can probably wait until regular business hours. However, if your injury cannot wait, you have a dental emergency and should call Modern Smiles right away.

NEXT STEPS FROM YOUR DENTAL EXPERTS

WHAT TO DO IN A DENTAL EMERGENCY

The first step in any dental emergency is to contact your dentist and inform them of what has happened as clearly as you can. Giving detailed information will give your Modern Smiles provider the understanding they need to point you in the right direction.

Your next steps may depend on the nature of the injury, but the ultimate goal is to preserve your teeth and gums until you can receive treatment.

BROKEN OR KNOCKED-OUT TEETH

When you experience a force or blow that results in a loud cracking or snapping sound in your mouth, take action immediately. If possible, remove the piece of broken tooth and try to fit it back into the tooth from which it came. If the piece doesn’t fit back in place, that’s okay. Store the broken piece in a glass of milk until you meet with the Modern Smiles team.

TOOTH ABSCESS

A tooth abscess or infection can be incredibly dangerous to not just your oral health, but your overall wellness as well. If you are in excruciating pain and/or experience severe facial swelling, call the Modern Smiles team right away. If a dentist cannot assist you immediately, go to the emergency room.

GUM OR JAW INJURIES

Certain gum and jaw injuries can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and gauze before you see the Modern Smiles team. However, if you suspect you have a broken jaw or a gum injury that won’t stop bleeding, head straight to the emergency room for immediate care.

If you are currently experiencing a dental emergency, use the information above to determine your next steps. For more information about Modern Smiles’s emergency dental care, contact us at (312) 500-7080 or use our easy online form to request your appointment today.
