HOW IT WORKS

WHAT IS BOTOX®?

Botox® (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is a neurotoxin that can provide many benefits without the need for invasive procedures or surgery. It works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that triggers muscle contractions. By preventing these muscle contractions, this injection can relax the muscles in the targeted area, which can reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging and reduce joint pain.

BOTOX® AND DENTISTRY

Most people do not immediately associate this injectable with dentistry. In reality, it can be used in dentistry to improve the functionality and appearance of your smile. Here are some ways we use it at Modern Smiles:

  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders: Botox® can be used to treat TMJ disorders by relaxing the muscles that are responsible for jaw clenching and teeth grinding. By injecting it into the muscles, it can reduce pain and improve jaw function.

  • Bruxism: Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is a common dental problem that can lead to tooth wear, jaw pain, and headaches. Botox® can reduce the intensity of the muscle contractions that cause teeth grinding, reducing the damage to teeth and relieving pain.

  • Gummy Smile: A gummy smile is a condition where a large portion of the gums is visible when smiling. It can be used to relax the muscles that lift the upper lip, reducing the amount of gum that is visible and creating a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

  • Lip Lines and Wrinkles: This injection can be used to treat “lip lines,” or fine lines around the mouth. It can also be used to smooth wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes. Injecting it into the muscles on the face can relax them, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

WHAT TO EXPECT

At Modern Smiles, our highly qualified dentists perform Botox® treatments in the comfort of our office. Here is what you can generally expect when preparing for your procedure:

You will first meet with one of our dentists to determine if this treatment is right for you. We will discuss the benefits and risks of the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

Your dentist will prepare the area to be treated by cleaning and disinfecting the skin.

Unlike many surgical procedures, these injections require no recovery time. After the procedure, you may experience some mild swelling or bruising around the injection site. This typically resolves within a few days.

Patients can expect to notice the effects of the injections within a few days, with maximum results occurring within 1-2 weeks. Depending on the treatment, results can last anywhere from 3-6 months.

We may schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the results of the procedure and determine if additional treatments are necessary.
